Positive feedback is like a compliment or a reward for your effort. Your skills were good enough (or even better), you made right decisions. Your actions get us closer to success. No matter whether we reached a goal or not, you’ve done the best that you could and what is even more important – you’ve done more than anyone on your place would do.
It’s always great to hear words like this. It proves that our efforts are put in the right direction. That we are valuable member of the team/project/organization. It shows us that we grow in the right area.
It’s easy to receive feedback like this, because who doesn’t like to hear a few good words about himself?
On the other hand, there’s also another type of feedback – a negative one. And I don’t have on mind complains or blaming, but constructive feedback.
Is it hard to receive it? Is it hard to hear what you should improve, change, get rid of totally? Emotions which accompany us depends on who and how give us the feedback. It also depends on ourselves. How we are reacting to criticism.
It is not as easy as with positive feedback.
Another problem is that we sometimes can feel that what we heard is unfair, we can don’t agree with the opinion. And if our emotions are negative, it makes them stronger.
Is it great to receive negative feedback? The answer was easy when we talked about positive, but negative is more sensitive.
Negative feedback tells us about places that we have to improve, shows us what we are doing wrong or not doing good enough. It basically aims to pinpoint areas of difficulty. Shows us the places where we need to grow.
When we put our emotions and reactions aside, the main difference between positive and negative feedback is that former tells us about places where we already grow and confirm that we are on right track, while the latter tells us about places that we need to grow, about areas that we have to put more focus on. And what is most important, negative feedback shows us areas that maybe we don’t even realize that we need to grow in.
That’s why I prefer receiving negative feedback. It’s really good to hear something good, I cannot disagree with that. But negative feedback often opens my eyes, shows me the places that I even didn’t think about or I didn’t realize that I have to work on.
It has got more value for me.
Even if sometimes it is hard to hear it.
And what type of feedback do you prefer?
